Abstract
To increase performance of tool life, it can be done by superhard coating on surface of cutting tool by using sputtering method. The research aim was to deposit titanium and nitrogen thin film on high speed steel surface, and to investigate the effct of depth of cut on tool. Thin film deposition was done by sputtering in vacuum chamber and flowed argon and nitrogen simultaneously. Formed thin film at 27 specimens were tested by micro hardness Vickers of 10 gf. Optimal condition of temperatures, times and gas ratio N2:Ar of sputtering were used to coat 54 tools. Testing of tool life were done by cutting medium carbon steel by cutting depth 0,5; 1,0; I,5 mm, feeding 0,084; 0,090; 0,112 mm/rotation and cutting speed 23; 28; 32; 36; 42 and 48 m/min. The results show that the optimal depth of cut of coated and uncoated tools were 1 mm, tool life and removal material were after coated titanium and nitrogen increased at 17% dan 40,3%, respectively.
